Mark Mobius – the Indiana Jones of Emerging Markets

Today’s guest is definitely in the ‘Legends League’. Learning at the feet of Sir John Templeton, Mark Mobius has both the skill and the humility of his mentor. In this fascinating interview where he joins us from Munich, Mark talks about what characterises a country as a frontier or an emerging market, which countries he has already invested in and which are on his radar. Mark and his team take a literal approach to active investing, travelling to the country to meet the management teams of the companies they invest in and helping them add value with better corporate governance. He sees most opportunities in Africa, Asia and Latin America with the biggest payback coming from those that have been ‘bombed out’ the most. Mobius had a keen interest in ESG (environmental, social and governance) long before it became politically correct, and now uses this as a key selection criteria before investing. If they don’t want help with ESG, they won’t be added to the portfolio. Mark sees the 2020s as a decade for stockpickers rather than passive index trackers, and that a key improvement would be for individual investors to access the private equity markets where much value is created outside of public markets. And, in case you were wondering, that’s a lightshade above Mark’s head, not a halo!
